ABOUT THE JURORS
-
Gerald Peters
Owner, Gerald Peters Gallery in New York, NY and Sante Fe, NM
Co-Juror for National Show: The Creative Process (2014)
Gerald Peters is the owner of The Gerald Peters Gallery at 24 East 78th Street just off 5th Avenue in Manhattan, New York and a second gallery by the same name in Sante Fe, New Mexico. Mr. Peters has been involved in the art business for over forty years as a dealer, collector, appraiser and consultant. He is known as one of the foremost, knowledgeable authorities on American nineteenth and early twentieth century works, the art of the American West, the Taos Society, and Santa Fe Art Colony; the works of Frederic Remington, Charles Russell, Albert Bierstadt, and Georgia O’Keeffe; and American Modernism. His solid business dealings and sense of integrity have gained him a worldwide reputation among art galleries, museums and collectors. His galleries have sold well over a billion dollars in art.
With his wife Katie, he founded the Santa Fe Art Foundation in 1981, now known as the Peters Family Art Foundation, to contribute to the community, in which they live, and to the art community, in which they work. The foundation contributes money for art supplies for Santa Fe schools and loans art to schools and other non-profits. A second primary aim of the Foundation is helping the needy and hungry in Santa Fe, through contributions to such organizations as St. Elizabeth Shelter, the Salvation Army and St. Vincent Hospital.
Another philanthropic endeavor was the creation of the Heart Gallery of New Mexico. Mr. Peters created a foundation board, to help support the Children, Youth and Families Department’s efforts in the state of New Mexico. The Heart Gallery is now active in almost all of the 50 states. It is a brilliant concept, with photographers volunteering their time to capture the essence of beautiful children and stimulating people to choose these children for adoption. The goal is to make sure that every child waiting has the opportunity to be placed in a kind, loving family.
