An Exhibition of Orehek's
Lights 'n Giggles is an art exhibition showcasing sculpture by artist Clayton Orehek and cartoons by career cartoonist Don Orehek. This show is an immersive art experience, displaying not only the talents of this LI native Uncle-Nephew pair but also a delightful dichotomy of artistic styles, generational ideals, and social commentary.
If you have seen neon on the East End, both artistic and commercial, chances are high it was crafted by Clayton. His Lights 'n Giggles sculptures are crafted from metal, glass, wood, and his signature effects using light. He incorporates poetry, found and upcycled objects, and even elements from nature. Involving the audience in the experience with the art is important to Clayton, so viewers are surprised with interactive pieces sprinkled throughout, such as using a crank to light up neon in order to complete the piece.
Don Orehek has had hundreds if not thousands of cartoons of his cartoons published since the 1960's. You've seen his work in the pages of the Saturday Evening Post, Family Circle, Good Housekeeping, Playboy, and Cracked among others. Lights 'n Giggles showcases nearly 100 pieces in various states of process- including roughs, pre-printed works, and some actual clippings- as well as some never-before-seen unpublished works. Upon close inspection, viewers are treated with notes, edits, and sign offs. Don's cartoons will have you in awe and hysterics, with some humor remaining relevant and some seeming downright vintage.
