Guest Juror: Matthew Langland, Artist, Key Animator of feature film ‘Waking Life’

The Cartoon has more than one meaning in art. It can be a caricature where a subject’s features are exaggerated in a humorous way. It’s also what those strange, flat little creatures that pop out of our imagination onto our drawing pad are called. And what we call an animated film. Lastly, it’s the full-size drawing made by an artist as a preliminary design for a painting or other work of art.

Matthew Langland
Artist and Key Animator of the feature film ‘Waking Life’

As a lifelong devotee of all things cartoon and comic, selecting this show from the dazzling diversity of submissions was for me a daunting but exciting challenge. Whether works addressed the theme directly or simply used it as a prompt, I found myself responding most enthusiastically to those that could transform the idea into something greater and take me as a viewer to unfamiliar and unexpected places. Looking at this group, what emerged as an underlying theme or unifying quality was a work's fierce commitment to its own idiosyncratic voice.

The pieces in this show range in character from whimsical and funny to mysterious and contemplative, from brazenly scathing to unabashedly ugly. Each offers an experience more substantive and affirming than one encounters in everyday life, something deeper than one expects when hearing the word 'Cartoon'.

Growing up in the Chicago area, Matthew Langland's earliest exposure to and education in painting was influenced by Chicago Imagists Jim Nutt, Karl Wirsum and Ed Paschke. He studied with Peter Saul and Michael Ray Charles at the University of Texas at Austin, worked as an animator on Richard Linklater's 2001 film 'Waking Life', and has been active as both a painter and illustrator in Brooklyn since 2002. His work has been exhibited in Austin, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York.
Reviewing a 2010 exhibition, Ian Bourland wrote in ArtForum, "Matthew Langland’s training and acerbic sense of humor shine through in his paintings, a twenty-first-century social realism, replete with tattoos, camera phones, and, naturally, vampires and cross-dressing. In this suite of 'self portraits,' the sinister and absurd undercurrents of life in a hard-boiled pseudobohemia are foregrounded, imbuing them with a both psychic and sociological tilt.’"
