ABOUT THE JURORS

Hideaki Ariizumi, AIA, Architect, Artist, and Owner of ArtSites Gallery
Co-Juror for Line, 2014

Born in Tokyo, Japan, Hideaki Ariizumi practices architecture in NYS as the principal architect of studio a/b architects. Previously, he was an associate with Steven Holl Architects, New York, and the senior architect with Kazuo Shinohara Atelier, Japan. At Steven Holl Architects, he guided the "Fukuoka Housing Project". In Kazuo Shinohara Atelier, he managed a variety of projects, including museums, university building, clinics, and residences. Hideaki both studied and taught at the Tokyo Institute of Technology.
At studio a/b architects, established in '92 with Glynis M. Berry, Hideaki is the lead designer on projects. He has a deep understanding of all phases of the design process. Using quick perspective sketches by hand as well as BIM program as a design tool, Hideaki captures and visually communicates nuances that impact the user’s experience of space. His designs advocate both the physical and intangible aspects of sites, creating choices for the user by stimulating a mix of experiences and stressing a connection to nature.
Architectural and furniture designs by studio a/b architects have been published in US, Japan and Europe, including Architectural Digest, The New York Times, and The New American House. Architectural projects have been awarded design awards including, the AIA Peconic Design Awards, the NY Council SARA Design Award, and SD Review. The “House on North Folk” was featured in the TV program “Amazing Vacation Homes,” repeatedly aired after September, ’04. In Metropolis Magazine Michael Sorkin cited studio a/b’s “elegant” urban design proposal for Hell’s Kitchen South as “perhaps the most readily and immediately realizable of all the projects”.
His art works, mostly related with spatial concepts, furniture and light, have been exhibited in NYC and art sites in Riverhead, founded by Glynis Berry.
Hideaki is a member of the American Institute of Architects.

Debbie Ma, Artist
Co-Juror for Line, 2014

Debbie Ma is a graphic designer by training from the Parsons School of Design. She has worked as a graphic designer in New York City for 20 years specializing in packaging and designed for major cosmetic companies, like Revlon, Estee Lauder, Maybelline, Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs to name a few. While working as a graphic designer, she followed her path as a fine artist, painting large format abstracts in mixed media and oils. Debbie has shown her work in local galleries and New York City over the years.
Debbie comments on her work: “My inspirations come from contemporary artists like Anselm Keifer, Zeng Fanzhi, Antonio Tapies; classic painters like El Greco and Goya; ancient Chinese calligraphers like Yan Zhenqing and Wang Xizhi; architects like Sanford White and Paul Rudolph; and appreciate the perfection and simplicity of Shaker furniture or the complexity of an ornately carved Philadelphia Chippendale highboy. I wet my creative appetite by dabbling in as many mediums available to me like fresco, pottery, printing, photography and have for many years now been a student of Chinese Calligraphy. As a graphic designer, I believe that beauty, integrity, good design and skill of execution is essential to any piece of art, and as an artist; the piece should have a soul. I try to follow these guidelines in all of my works.”
