ABOUT THE JUROR

Eric Brown, Artist and Co-Owner, Tibor de Nagy Gallery, NYC
Juror for Composition, 2014

Eric Brown is a painter and a gallerist. He is co-owner of Tibor de Nagy Gallery, a leading New York gallery that represents New York School artists from the 1950s and 1960s, as well as contemporary and major 20th Century artists. The gallery has presented in recent years exhibitions of Francis Picabia, Sam Francis, Elizabeth Bishop, Larry Rivers, and Jess. The gallery has been honored with two AICA Awards, including Best New York Gallery Show for its 2008 Jess exhibition.
Brown has organized dozens of gallery exhibitions over the last twenty years including the 2011 exhibition Tibor de Nagy Gallery Painters & Poets. The exhibition received a front page review in the New York Times, as well as extended coverage in The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, PBS Newshour, International Herald Tribune, Art in America, and Art Forum. The book that was published on the occasion of the exhibition has become an important resource for academics studying the period and is now assigned in graduate and undergraduate programs. The gallery today finds itself at the center of a burgeoning scholarship and growing interest in the New York School and its poets and artist. Last spring, he organized the exhibition Jane Freilicher: Painter Among Poets. It will be presented at the Poetry Foundation in Chicago in early 2014.
Brown had an exhibition in August 2013 at Ille Arts in Amagansett. Although he has maintained a studio practice for years, the show was his first solo exhibition. He paints small-scaled abstract paintings. His palette is vibrant and he regularly works straight from the tube. The works are non-objective although references to architecture and the human form may be seen. He admires painters such as Richard Diebenkorn, Jane Freilicher, Nicholas Krushenick, Jonathan Lasker, Giorgio Morandi, Leon Polk Smith, Myron Stout, Wayne Thiebaud, among many others.
Brown serves on a number of boards, including The Flow Chart Foundation, and the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at SUNY New Paltz. In addition, he is a former board member of Friends of the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center. Brown is a graduate of Vassar College.
